Power is one of the main goal for all of mankind. Whether in a game, war, or life, a thirst for power has and forever will drive humans. Developing throughout the 17th century and after, foreign leaders have taken advantage of the world in an attempt to gain power, and influence. The film “Icarus” by Bryan Fogel, evidences how Vladimir Putin and Russia interfered with their athletes, allowing and encouraging athletes to use performance enhancing drugs. This comes in an attempt to win and further gain political power for the state. Putin’s ideas and involvement in the illegal doping closely relates to previous action in absolutist monarchies and other previous dominant countries. As previously stated, Vladimir Putin dominates Russian operation and thus contains absolute power in Russia. In “Leviathan”, by Thomas Hobbes, a system of absolutism is supported as Hobbes states, “The only way to erect such a common power… is to confer all their power and strength upon one man”(Hobbes). Hobbes’ and Putin’s ideas are very similar, as Putin runs the absolute monarchy of which Hobbes supports. Sequentially, Frederick the Great was the Prussian leader who defended and ran an enlightened absolutist monarchy. When voicing his conjectures and opinions in “Political Testament”, Frederick the Great explains that “all actions must be well reasoned, and...must flow towards one goal; which is the strengthening of the state and the furthering of its power. However, such a system can flow but from a single brain”(Frederick the Great). Putin’s system is similar to the one that Frederick the Great endorsed, as Putin further strengthens his state as well as dominates the power.
