If you are black in America and someone has told you you’re acting white you are not the only one. Mostly it’s children who are biracial that hear this statement and it’s a struggle for black kids and adults trying to be themselves. TyCrystar from urbandictionary.com describes acting white as “a term used with black people to call this person a sell-out.” and I tend to agree with this explanation. Acting white is usually an offspring of people not being able to accept change, racial stereotypes, and people who are trying to others feel uncomfortable.
America is imperfect; however, no matter how messed up the U.S. is, when it comes to ethnicity the country is one of the most diverse countries in the world. The race that people identify you with also determines how you are perceived through life. The reason people look at you in this way is stereotypes that society has placed on ethnicities. Dictionary.com defines stereotypes as “a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group.” Most who tell black people they are acting white have misconceptions that all white people do things the same way and all black people are alike. Although it may be common for individuals in racial groups to share similar interest because America doesn’t have one set culture, races can enjoy the liberty of conversing and learning the different dynamics of other ethnic groups.
