Our American identity has changed greatly between our generations. Back when the stories by Quindlen, Kennedy, and Cofer were written, there was a lot more segregation. The immigrants back then made an astounding impact on the culture that we have today. Today we have a blend of cultures that live in our country. Some races are more accepted than others, however. So, even though our identity has evolved greatly between the last generations, it still is a long way from harmony.
An example of American identity is the Boston Marathon bombing, which took place three years ago. Runners were just getting ready to finish the long race, when two bombs went off, one right after the other, right beside the road where they were running. However, people can come together through these heinous events that are sparked by race, no matter what race we are. It also shows that people can find unity in dark situations and come together when there are terrible things threatening our nation.
People in this country today have mostly come together. Some groups of people still do not get along with each other, but that will hopefully change as time moves forward. We have made great strides as a country. We have lessened racial tension greatly and have given an opportunity to new immigrants.
It is easier for immigrants today than it was back when there was less opportunity and more tension between races. Today, immigrants have a better opportunity than immigrants back then. The immigrants today have a much greater chance of getting a good job than back then. New immigrants also have less racial tension today than they did back then. Some immigrants from before were not very well liked, and did not get a good opportunity because of that. Other groups of immigrants were more accepted and were given better opportunities to fit in and to get a decent
