HYPERTENSION Vicki is a 45-year-old African American women who is self-employed. She travels a lot for work and eats at fast food restaurants for most of her meals. Vicki has been diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure). Hypertension is a common disease that affects the heart and blood vessels. Hypertension usually develops slowly and is often overlooked, some people go years without knowing they have it, however, this disease can be managed with medication, a healthy diet, exercise, and lowering stress levels (Mayo clinic, 2016).
HOW HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IS DETERMINED Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood the heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood the heart pumps and the smaller the arteries, the higher your blood pressure is (Mayo clinic, 2016). Normal blood pressure for an adult should be 120/80. The 120 is called the systolic pressure and is measured by the activity of the heart while it is pumping blood into the arteries. The 80 is the diastolic pressure and is measured in between heart beats while the heart is resting (Loeffler, A & Hart, M, 2015, pp 102). This is why the bottom (diastolic) number is usually smaller, the heart beats more than it rests. Your blood pressure can vary from your left and right arm, so it is important to take your blood pressure in both arms to ensure an accurate reading. Having the most accurate reading will allow the doctor to diagnose the stage of hypertension.…
