29 September 2015 My response to Michael O’Hare’s “A letter to my students”
In the article “A letter to my students” Michael O’Hare shares his perspective of the education system in California. He points out that his generation has cheated his students through both their own actions and through their choices in government officials in a terrible swindle. He then explains the selfishness of people for not paying it forward to future generations. The infrastructure of society may be damaged, but O’Hare assures his students that they can fix this with some minor tweaking.

I agree because the real crime against my generation is the feeling of entitlement of people. The government has many programs that work to help the poor. This causes people to ask the question “Why should I care about other people if the government will take care of them for us?” This lack of morals and empathy of others has left this generation in shambles. O’Hare says that the state of California has fallen to the bottom in school spending on the art classes, AP courses, physical education, and the basic amenities such as working toilets. O’Hare tells his students that they have been taught by teachers who have been paid less and less and trained not so well. He also talks about his problems with the education curriculum. I agree because students are being taught about logarithms and the Pythagorean theorems and not on basic aspects of life such as writing clear and legible English, or how the government and business actually work. He also shares his concerns with the budget deficit that is plaguing the state of California. Less and less money is being invested in public works and other basic government
