In Flannery O 'Connor 's short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” a grandmother and her son 's family decide to take a roadtrip to Florida. During their journey, the family encounters a few mishaps that prevent them from having a successful trip. Unfortunately, they run into a group of convicts, the leader being The Misfit who decides to kill the whole family. With the use of textual evidence, it can be argued that it is the grandmas fault that her whole family, including herself, is killed by the Misfit and his gang. The grandma makes multiple mistakes throughout the story which can be directly related to the death of her family. The grandma 's first mistake happens before they even encounter the Misfit, and it is when she brings her pet cat on the roadtrip. The narrator says, “She didn 't intend for the cat to be left alone in the house for three days because he would miss her too much and she was afraid he might brush against one of the gas burners and accidentally asphyxiate himself” (O’Connor 406). Later in the story, the cat startles Bailey, the grandmas son who is driving, which causes the family to get into a car accident. O’Connor writes, “The children were thrown to the floor and their mother, clutching the baby, out the door onto the ground; the old lady was thrown into the front seat” and “ Bailey remained in the driver 's seat with the cat...” (O’Connor 411).
