A Critical Analysis Of 'Socrates' By Jill Avery

The Socratic Method is a tool used in many classrooms in order to engage students; the method is named after the philosopher Socrates. It ultimately teaches a deeper level of critical thinking amongst students by requiring them to repeatedly evaluate a claim they previously made in order to better perform multiple learning strategies. The author Jill Avery begins by introducing the “case method” stating “many educators use it [in order] to help their students strengthen their critical thinking and decision making skills” (1) It is said that Socratic (case) method promotes active learning “where the students are responsible for managing their own learning rather than relying on an instructor”. The article itself seems to act as a “Socratic” counter argumentative essay for the audience in which the author describes methods of effectively teaching the pros and cons teaching English core content; once revised, teachers are able to better engage students by using literary education to …show more content…
As students are not yet capable of objectively accessing their own self-qualities, whether over emphasizing positive or belittling negative, the instructor must formulate a clear-cut rubric for each assignment and allow a percentage to be weighted upon fair peer review. I agree with the articles favor of utilizing the case method to better discipline students into clearer thinking and accessing multiple learning methods. I plan on using this method in my classroom because it brings insightful discussions to any topic it’s used to breakdown.
