Creative Writing: Why I Like Socrates

Decent Essays
I like Socrates because it's rare to find people like him these days. By this, I mean people who ask challenging questions in the most annoying way that you just can't answer directly just off the top of your head. You actually have to do a lot of thinking. Don't get it twisted, I'm not saying that I like people who annoyed others. It's just that Socrates' style is different. Whether his way of making people feel stupid by asking a lot of questions are intentional or not, I'm not sure, but I think Socrates want to step out of the norm and have dialogue differently. It might come across as he is trying to make people feel stupid, ignorant, whatever, you name it but I can see Socrates as my friend. One thing that I will do around him is just

Throughout the work Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito, written by Greek philosopher Plato, Socrates is faced with moral and ethical challenges. In Euthyphro, Socrates attempts to convince Euthyphro that prosecuting his father might be sacrilegious, despite his duty as a citizen to report any crime committed. Socrates questions Euthyphro on what he believes piety to be, as a way for Euthyphro to understand the alternatives to directly turning his father in. This is followed by Socrates trial in the Apology, where he is being accused of corrupting the youth, not believing in the Gods, and believing in new divinity. Socrates attempts to defend himself, but the irony here, is that it’s certainly not an apology.…

On a more allegorical level, Socrates acts as philosophy itself; philosophy is a study in which not everything can necessarily come to a conclusion and nothing can be assumed. Speaking as if there is a direct answer to philosophical questions or speaking extensively on a topic that one does not know much about is not only pretentious, but also shows a certain level of ignorance of whoever is speaking. If philosophy was on trial defending itself in the eyes of mankind, it would fight against the people who claimed to fully understand the unanswerable questions, and question them on how they know what they think they do; this is precisely what Socrates…

He knows to never attack in an argument, to always defend. He defends his arguments very calmly and never gets frustrated, instead he frustrates the other guy and lets them attack. It’s quite intriguing because he uses irony, visual aids, and trick questions to prove each and every one of his points without actually revealing what his opinion on the matter is. You can never tell if Socrates agrees with the definition and is just critiquing it to make the other person think, or if he disagrees and actually thinks that they are being erroneous. It’s almost as if Socrates is playing a gigantic mind game with the audience and the characters in the Republic that will all be solved at the end of the book.…

Additionally, Socrates has a family and a life outside of philosophy and even still he maintains his position towards death upon being convicted; that he will make no judgments on it and will go through with being sentenced if it means there is a chance that in death he can teach again. Philosophy and challenging peoples assumptions is Socrates vocation and something that he is truly passionate about. Socrates, like philosophy, has no biases and does what he does for his own enjoyment and his own personal convictions. Towards the end of his speech, Socrates again reaffirms the importance of himself and others like him to society even though they might view them as an annoyance.…
