However, some entertainment that is referenced in both Ancient Rome and in today's society is horseracing, soccer, boxing, wrestling and hockey to name a few. We also have plenty of horror/thriller movies and movies that feature fighting to the death, blood and gore. All of which were common traits in Roman entertainment. I think history has repeated itself in some aspects. We still heavily rely on entertainment, not necessarily as a distraction but as a way to fill the time which was common in Ancient Rome for those who were rich. Entertainment today, also tends to encase violence in some way even though it is not as brutal as it was in Ancient Rome. It serves some of the same purposes. It brings people together whether it be sports events or movies, people come together to watch. As far as the use of violence to create social structure, there are still people today who see the value of using death and execution as a way to maintain social order. However, I think today's society uses fear to maintain social order where the use of death and execution are far more rare than it was in Ancient
