Upon reading the article, "Violence in Video Games Reduces Violence in the Real World", the author, Charles Herold, clearly believes that video games do not create violent behavior. For starters, the article first introduces an interesting point by comparing gladiators from thousands years ago to video games from today. For example, he argues his point by mentioning the violent deeds performed by gladiators, "A couple of thousand years ago, families went to the Colosseum in Rome to cheer as gladiators sliced their opponents' limbs or were eaten by lions" (Herold 3).This uses logos by evoking the logical side of the readers by showing the readers a different aspect of violence to prove a point. Not only that, he evokes pathos by using imagery to depict the terrifying violence of gladiators to demonstrate to the readers that video games are not as terrible as compared to gladiators. Furthermore, he even compares video game …show more content…
For starters, the author uses colloquial language throughout his writing. For example, the author creates a casual tone by describing his favorite game in a video game," I especially liked Christie for her gymnastics-style fighting " (Herold 11). This creates an informal tone which creates a comfortable environment for the viewers similar to a conversation with a friend. Furthermore, the author uses abstract language when describing a scene within a game. For example, the author uses words such as "beautiful" and "ingenious" within his article which allows readers to interpret the meaning based on their values. In the end, I have several critical thinking questions that I was pondering such as: Why did the author used an informal tone rather than a formal tone? What effects does the informal tone affect the credibility of the author? Should video games be accepted as a form of entertainment rather than the evil villain of the entertainment
