The Parallels of Egyptian and Western Culture Ancient Egypt was a time of discovery, knowledge, and the need for power in the ancient civilization. Egyptians during this time thought of family as the most important thing in the world and divorce, although allowed, was very rare during this time since Egyptians saw marriage as a very important commitment. Many men who married often were in polygamous marriages and had many wives but more often than not they had a “chief” or head wife who was deemed as higher than the others. The beauty world today is filled women and men trying their best to change the shape of their face and elongate their eyes. Many older people are also trying to get rid of their wrinkles so they can look at least thirty years younger. But this way of thinking is no different than what many Egyptians were trying to do. During those times, Egyptians men, women, and children all wore makeup. Kohl was worn around their eyes, which is still a common beauty product today. The kohl was not only for fashion though, it was used as protection from the sun, another thing many of us today are taking into consideration when it comes to our daily beauty routines. As for Egyptians fascination with preserving their youth, they used many oils to keep their skin moisturized and smooth and to stop wrinkles. With these similarities it’s easier to see why ancient Egypt is comparative to western culture (Browne 4). Entertainment is another popular venture for the Egyptians people and another reason we have them to thank for not being bored all this time. Many forms of entertainment the Egyptians used were board games such as dice and checkers, which are games we still play today. They also played sports like, boxing, swimming, and wrestling also sports that are still popular today. As I began researching this topic, I began to discover all the ways ancient Egypt’s culture was much like our own, to the way we all looked at architecture, how important beauty and hygiene are to all of us, and how power seems to still be one of the vital things they strived for what we as a society are still striving for today. I had no idea that we had such a similar way of living until I began this essay. The lessons we can all learn from ancient Egypt is how we should keep striving for being a fully developed nation and that there is more room in our culture for exploration. I feel that in the next thousand years, the different society’s we’ll have will fully be able to see and explain how our two cultures are truly one in the
