Disasters of any kind (natural or man-made, domestic or international) remain great concern for humankind. Disaster comes in different forms such as: floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, storm surges, tornadoes, wildfires or terrorist attacks and so forth. Any forms of disaster serve as threat and can result in loss of lives, property damage and destruction of infrastructure. This was the case in Ellicott City, Maryland where two people were dead, several people were rescued, and properties were damaged due to severe flash flood (Brosnan, 2016).
Overview of the event
States of Maryland, Ellicott City encountered unusual day as rain and flash flood took over the city on July 30, 2016; heavy rainfall in the city resulted in severe flash flooding that damaged several buildings, and numerous vehicles were impacted while land erosion destroyed roads. Flash flood warning was issued to Ellicott City and Baltimore. The radar loop showed the evolution of constant heavy rainfall in Ellicott City around 7 p.m. to 9 p. m., the rain was almost 6 inches which is equal to a month’s normal rainfall. The heavy downpour and little lightning was between 7:45 p.m. and 8 p. m. while the severe flooding took place around 8 p. m. and 9 p. m (National Weather Service, 2016).
