Knarles and Barkley manage a maintenance company in three different states, District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The company is based in Maryland. They have a number of contracts with building owners where they have agreed to provide building maintenance to both residential and commercial buildings. They receive monthly payments of $2,000 to $4,000 depending upon the size of the building. Often Knarles and Barkley will replace outdated and broken equipment such as water heaters and boilers that are apart of the building’s heating system. Knarles and Barkley have four employees; one of them is a licensed plumber in the District of Columbia. The firm as part of their employment agreement pays his yearly license renewal. In the past this has been Knarles responsibility, but has since past the duty to Barkley. Barkly has not renewed the license this year. The company seems to have respectable reputation, but have gotten themselves into some legal matters. While Knarles was on vacation, Barkley entered into a contract with Ian Chetum, a building owner in Virginia. Chetum’s heat had gone out in his building and was in immediate need of Knarles and Barkley’s services. Barkley sent his workers to the building, which ultimately found the manufacturer has recalled the boiler. The boiler has a defect that does not allow all the carbon monoxide produced by the boiler to vent properly.
