Since the school has many students of different cultures and those who speak different languages it has been hard to communicate effectively with the parents. Recently we have become aware of the fact that most of our written and phone communications are only in English. The school provides monthly newsletters for the students to bring home to the parents to keep them aware of what has been going on in the school. However, all of this is done only in English. The parents of the students who do not speak English are not able to understand and therefore cannot be involved in or made aware of the needs of their child. The school also has a telephone communication system to remind parents of important events and or emergencies. Since this is only done in English important information is not getting communicating to all the parents. Parents are not involved and do not participate in conferences and or student assemblies due to the lack of proper communication techniques. Parents are often frustrated or misunderstand what is being communicated to them. Recently the 5th grade class had a field trip and was told to be at the school by 6am this was communicated to the students verbally and in writing. One major benefit is once the teacher utilizes the workshops and resources that ICI offers it will provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to be able to better communicate with the diverse student body. The different communication styles of the cultuerl diverse student body can become a barrier to the staff and hinder the students learning. Staff members will learn to apply the knowledge learned from these workshops and become more effective in their teaching methods. A second benefit is that all the information learned will not only benefit the school but also the students and parents.
