Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a recent finding in mainly, but not limited to professional athletes in contact sports as well as veterans. A lot of focus has been put on athletics, many sports such as football, boxing, soccer, and hockey. I have decided to narrow my research down to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in football players because of that, critical knowledge needs to be known in order to understand the research proposal. American Football began in the year 1889 being played in the most elite universities around the country. The first official game of college football was played on November 6 1869. From there football began to take off, leading the first professional football player Pudge Heffelfinger in 1892, he was the first player to be paid to play football. Then came the National Football League then known as the American Professional Football Association in 1920 (Jarrett, 1989).
Today football is one of the most popular sports in today’s society. From watching your kids play in middle school or high school to watching college football or the National Football League (NFL) on TV. Around 220 million people tune in to watch their favorite college team during the year and 200 million watch the NFL. Aside from the popularity of watching football, it is also one of the most participated in sports with around “3 million youth, 1.1 million high school, and 80,000 college football players” (Concussion, 2016).
