The Concussion protocol
Unlike a broken ankle or other injuries you can feel with your hand, or see on an X-ray, a concussion is a disruption of how the brain works. – USA football & CDC. Football is the number one sport in causes of concussions for teenage athletes in The United States and the safety of our athletes should be our number one priority, but some organizations focus more on the wins than their player’s health. Because of these reasons and others I will divulge on, I feel that the NFL and other football organizations should focus more on the safety of their athletes, especially high school and college athletes. Concussions have been a growing problem and need to be looked at more closely. One reason is that untreated concussions

Many people return to play too soon after receiving their concussion, while most the time in high school sports only the physical aspect of the concussion is tested, not the mental part I Have had a concussion myself, I can personally say that the High school concussion protocol is very flawed, all I had to do to receive clearance to continue in football was preform some exercises and tell the trainer that I didn’t get a headache. While this tests your physical ability to perform, it does not accurately tell if the swelling of your brain has gone down enough to consider you as “non-concussed” and the mental state of the athlete should be looked at more to determine when it is safe for a player to …show more content…
Many High school and college coaches would rather have their players “rub some dirt on it” and get back to playing than take time to access their health, as stated earlier many high school and college athletes would never tell their coach that they have an injury such as a concussion. It is the coach’s job to take them out and have someone access the player to ensure that they are healthy enough to play. Current High school and college coaches would rather keep their starts in and risk serious injury just to win a game even if it is not in the best interest of the athlete. There is also very low funding on concussion research. While the NFL has recently donated $30 million in research funds on concussion prevention. According to rueders.com the U.S. is donating another $14 million to the project, but this only came after many lawsuits from player to the NFL and the government for not being compensated for their injuries, It took over one thousand lawsuits to the NFL to finally have them donate to a cause that would affect them most of all, showing what little interest there is in the matter. Even the entertainment industry generates almost more money per movie than is spent on concussion research annually. According to businessinsider.com the Movie Jurassic World made 981 million dollars in its first two weeks after the premier. That is nearly half what is annually donated to the concussion research. Which averages about 2 billion a year. So
