CVA Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA) or stroke is a medical emergency where the brain is damage because the blood flow to the brain gets cut off (National Stroke Association, 2016). When brain tissue does not receive enough nutrients and oxygen the brain cells die (Glenn, 2008). CVA is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United State (Andrea & Thorne, 2009). People over the age of 65 years and unhealthy life style are at higher risk of suffering from a stroke (National Stroke Association, 2016). The most common causes of CVA are Ischemic CVA and Hemorrhagic CVA (Glenn, 2008). Ischemic CVA occurs when the arteries of the brain gets block by fatty deposits called plaque that build up in the walls of the arteries (Glenn, 2008). Hemorrhagic CVA happens when the wall of the blood vessel burst and causes bleeding in the brain (National Stroke Association, 2016). CVA Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA) is a temporary stroke cause by an interruption of blood flow to the brain (Glenn, 2008). The symptoms can last at least 24 hours, some patients can suffer stroke, and others will recover without any others problems (Andre & Thorne, 2009). According to the National Stroke Association (2016), CVA has risk factors that can be control and reduce such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Diabetes, Obesity, diet, smoking and alcohol consumption, others risk factors cannot be control such as gender, age, family history, and race.
