Nash’s symptoms displayed in A Beautiful Mind include delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized behavior and speech. The combination of delusions and hallucinations are what eventually bring about Dr. Nash having his disorder diagnosed. He constantly imagines friends, conversations, and work that is not true. His delusional beliefs about having a government assignment relate to persecution, referential, and grandiose beliefs. Persecution is the belief that one is being spied on. As Dr. Nash continues his work to break codes, he believes the Russians are spying on him. This results in often paranoid and erratic behavior. Most often a black car is shown following him around, and this ultimately leads to his breaking point in 1959 during a presentation. The spies arrive and Dr. Nash, scared of being taken, runs out of the room with no warning. After this he is taken to a psychiatric hospital to be tested. Referential belief is when random things are believed to have significant importance or are personal. This is portrayed whenever Dr. Nash finds importance and codes in everyday magazines. As he strives to complete his imagined assignment, he constantly finds codes in everything he sees. The movie illustrates this very well by showing his office covered floor to ceiling in writings and newspaper clippings. Dr. John Forbes Nash undeniably contributed to the world of math, and few to none would state that schizophrenia discredits his work. In fact, he has brought insight to a disorder that many view as scary and may not want to discuss. Rather than making Dr. Nash seem “crazy”, the movie illustrates his ability to rise above his delusion, and learn to continue living his life.
