There are many kinds of mental disorders that affect those around the world. Perhaps one of the most devastating is schizophrenia. Schizophrenia attacks the ability to distinguish between emotions and thoughts. Perhaps one of the most well-known cases of schizophrenia is Dr. John Forbes Nash. Recently deceased, Dr. Nash continues to be renowned for his theories and work in mathematics, and holds the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize and 2015 Abel Prize. All of these achievements coincide with his continuous struggle with this mental disorder. The movie, A Beautiful Mind, documents his journey, struggles, and diagnosis with schizophrenia in an extremely accurate way. John Forbes Nash has always shown a great strength in the field of math. At nineteen he chooses to go to Princeton, and this results in a degree in mathematics. His discoveries in school, and after, have given the world the Nash equilibrium and various other mathematic works (Nowak 522). However, during all his success, signs of paranoid schizophrenia become prevalent. Starting at Princeton he begins to imagine people and often converses with them. This leads to an imagined task from the government to break Russian codes. Eventually, his paranoia and beliefs overtake his rationality, and this leads to his diagnosis. Schizophrenia is a non-curable mental disorder that affects less than 1% of the population.
