Every single day, the words sexual harassment and sexual assault get used interchangeably. People are focused on creating humor in horrible situations as a defense mechanism to prevent themselves from looking weak and that makes them end up overlooking the details. Unfortunately to the victims, they know the difference all too well. An article called “6 Bizarre Realities of Being a Man Who Was Raped by a Woman”, explains that people do not take sexual assault and harassment seriously. The victim explains, “From here on out, every part of this story would be absolutely typical of a sexual assault ... if the genders were reversed” (Mannen). Our society is even too ignorant to acknowledge gender when sexual offenses occur and more times than …show more content…
For instance, less physical actions and more verbal torment makes up sexual harassment. “Sexual harassment can include a variety of actions, such as, unwelcome sexual advances, asking or pushing for sexual favors, and any type of verbal or physical act involving sex” (“What's the Difference..”). Although those events seem almost harmless, they can become more specific and traumatize a person in that situation. Looking deeper into sexaul harrassment, jokes geared towards sex can become considered sexual harassment. One website goes deeper into this topic and brings up more specific types of sexual harassment. “Remarks or jokes about a person's body or about sexual advances that make them feel uncomfortable, showing naked pictures or sex-related objects, requesting sexual favors, unwanted physical touching, including sexual assault. Additionally, Quid pro quo, when someone in power says they will give or take away a job benefit in return for a sexual demand, can be included as harassment” (“What's the Difference...”). In some cases, people do not take sexual harassment as seriously as sexual assault. Other times people do not know the difference, but knowing the contrast can help people understand
