Downs and Wardle don’t specifically talk about the five paragraph format, but they do mention the importance of knowing how to write in a college level setting and how you were introduced to believe that the continuation of writing is going to be exactly what you are being repeatedly taught in high school and college. Just like the illusion that the five paragraph essay is a wonderful format that will help you be successful in all types of essays and writing assignments, Downs and Wardle also believe that teaching someone only one form of writing will more than likely not be of any advantage to them. “We do not know if writing essays on biology in an English course helps students write lab reports in biology courses. This list helped me to realize that I am not the only one that thinks differently when I entered college. One of the misconceptions they share with us is that “The instructor is my audience, the only person who will read my writing,” and then respond with, “Writing in college requires you to be aware of many different audiences: your teachers, your classmates, the campus community as a whole” (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1). Of course, they mention the five paragraph essay as one of the misconceptions people have over college writing. They mention that this “lousy model” is only good enough for certain situations but when it comes to composing a well written and informed essay, this wouldn’t be of any help (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1). “Your college writing tasks will ask you to build on some of the good writing habits you have (formulating a thesis, structure, organization, and the like) while requiring you to learn new formats for various disciplines and writing purposes” (“Ten Misconceptions About College Writing” 1).
