“The five-paragraph formula confuses and alienates students and undermines our most basic goals as writing instructors,” stated Marie Foley, as she composed her work of “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay”. The five-paragraph formula has been taught to structure and give students a proper form to write an essay. Creating a simple and easy way for teachers to teach in bulks, and not have to worry about going in depth to broaden students minds. Although, it limits room for creativity, challenges, and personalization. Students begin to master the formula, gather three parts of information related to their topic, and don’t actually stop and think about the meaning of their topic. Students don’t see how their topics within their essay relates
