Quasi-War with the French

July 1798 treaties with France rescinded and Congress allows attack on French ships. It was an undeclared war fought at sea. John Adams did not want full scale war. Hamilton did.

Alien and Alien Enemies Act

Gave presidential power to depart "dangerous" aliens. Also the power to expel or imprison aliens at will.

Sedition Act

Made it a crime to speak, publish, or write anything false or malicious about the US government. Designed to silence Republicans but backfired and led to Jeffersons presidency.

Scientific expedition ordered by Jefferson to explore the Louisiana purchase.



Sacajaweya was the diplomat, guide, and interpreter on the expedition.

Burr-Hamilton Duel

Vice President Aaron Burr and former Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton fueled because of deep hatred for one another. Hamilton missed a shot but Burr did not and Hamilton died.

Embargo Act

Prohibited American ships from trading in all foreign ports. Failure that greatly diminished American exports. No impact on GB

Cause of the War of 1812

1. Maritime rights and GB imposing trade restrictions with the US.



2. GB providing aid to Native Americans to stop western expansion in North America.

Battle of Bunker Hill

William Prescott and 1500 defended against the British on breeds Hill three times before having to retreat. GB suffered massive casualties 50%

Second Continental Congress

John Adams suggested the creation of a continental army and nominated George Washington to lead it. Difference from first Congress was now the main issue was war.

Common Sense

A book written in plain English by Thomas Pain arguing a complete separation from GB. Written so all Americans could read it.

The Declaration of Independence

An official document that formally divided US from GB.

Battle of New York

GB plan to attack NYC and Long Island. Largest battle during the revolutionary war based off manpower.

Battle of Saratoga

British three pronged attack on Hudson River Valley. American victory after two battles. Combined armies of Heratio Gates and Benedict Arnold.

Valley Forge

General Howe defeated GW who retreated to Valley Forge for the winter. Facing impossible nature conditions GW recovered to turn the tide of the war.

Siege of Yorktown

GW caught wind of French sailing to Yorktown and marched from the South to corner General Cornwallis of GB. The revolutionary war was over.

Battle of Trenton

GW crossed the Delaware on Dec 26 on the middle of the night and did considerable damage to the hessians.

Benedict Arnold

US major general who played a pivotal part in Battle of Saratoga. Defected to the British army after not being promoted.

Horatio Gates

Former British General who moved to US and asked George Washington to have command in the continental army. Fought at Saratoga with Benedict Arnold.

Molly Pitchers

Women in the revolutionary war who helped operate artillery and poured water onto cannons with pitchers to cool them off.

General Cornwallis

British General that marched South to inspire loyalists, but ended up surrendering at Yorktown to lose the war.

Nathanael Greene

Successfully defended against Cornwallis in the South and became GW's most trusted officer
