Epidemiology
-the study of how microbes spread within a group or population.
Portal of entry
-the way a microbe enters and infects a new host.
Reservoir of infection
- an object that allows a microbe to grow, reproduce and maintain the ability to infect a new host.
Fomite
- an object that allows a microbe to survive and pass to a new host.
Opportunistic pathogens
-Debilitated and immunosuppressed individuals are more likely to develop infections.
-infectious microorganism that is normally a commensal or does not harm its host but can cause disease when the host’s resistance is low.
Normal biota
-harmless and some are even beneficial
Transient organisms
-found on skin for short periods of time, do not grow there, some can cause disease from one to another
Antiseptic
-antimicrobial agent kill remaining microbe
Aseptic technique
-method of handling microbes and materials in a way that minimizes contamination
Inoculation
-transfer microorganisms from one medium to another
inoculum
-Sample being transferred
Inoculating loop and needle
-two instruments are commonly used to transfer an inoculum. made from nichrome metal alloy, heats up very quickly
Isolation streak plate
-widely used method to separate individual bacteria from mixtures
Isolated colonies
-concentration of bacteria get so low that a single bacteria comes of the loop
Autotroph
-(feed self) organism that utilizes inorganic carbon as their source of carbon
Heterotrophic
-organisms cannot synthesize organic molecules from CO2
Media
-create proper environment in order to cultivate bacteria in laboratory, availible both broth and agar
Mycobacterian tuberculosis
-cause tuberculosis, may take years to develop into disease, can spread to other before ones is sick.
cold virus
-Develop faster, don't make host too sick, exposing to many other, from work to school.
Fomite
-object allow microbe to survive and pass to new host
Soap
-break down oil in skin, oil trap bacteria,
break down cell membrane, hand rubbing remove bacteria,
Pure culture
-obtain by isolating bacteria
-develop vaccine, study organism that cause disease.
Robert koch
agar, derived from seaweed, provide solid surface to grow bacteria, isolated colonies.
Autocave
-Instrument used to Sterilize media and equipment
Incubater
-hold constant temp, to grow bacteria
Incinerator
Device sterilize inoculating tool
