    The journey from being doubtful of yourself to being confident is a physical and mental transition. In the book I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, the main character Ed struggles with self confidence because of the situation he is in. Ed is a nineteen-year-old man living as a taxi driver, who does not have many friends. One day Ed gets a playing card in the mail with three addresses on it. When Ed goes to those houses, his life dramatically changes for the better. Ed learns and gains self confidence through the messages he delivers and the people he meets. In the first section of the book, The First Message, Ed is not confident. Ed starts thinking about his siblings and how they have achieved much more than him. This leads him to thinking about Audrey and her sexual encounters. While pondering Ed says, “It’s only sex. That’s what I tell myself anyway. I lie a lot” (22). Ed admits to himself that he lies to himself a lot. This shows that he does not want to tell himself the truth about what is happening in his life and be confident. He is also showing that he believes nobody would be attracted to him. Next, Ed is walking out of the courtroom and the gunman from the robbery came up to him and whispers in his ear, “You’re a dead man, remember it everyday when you look in the mirror” (38).
