Method 1. Scissors were used to cut the rubber band, making the rubber band one straight line instead of a circular shape. 2. One end of the rubber band was securely tied to the middle of the skewer. The other end was securely tied to the hook of the 100g slotted steel weight. 3. The skewer was placed along the rim of the 250mL measuring cylinder, which allowed the rubber band and steel weight to hang within the measuring cylinder. Play dough was placed, to secure the skewer, to the edges of the measuring cylinder (the setup of the structure described in Step 2 & 3 is shown in Figure 2). 4. The thermometer was immediately placed inside the water, and the temperature was measured and recorded as close to boiling point as possible. A ruler was then placed along the side of the measuring cylinder and the stretch length of the rubber band, between the skewer and the steel weight, was recorded. 6. The thermometer was left inside the measuring cylinder. When the water had dropped to 80 0C, the new stretch length of the rubber band, between the skewer and the steel weight, was recorded. 7. Step 6…

Alex Ross’s article in the New Yorker, “Marking art n a time of rage,” begins with a poignant question: “What is the point of making beautiful things, or of cherishing the beauty of the past, when ugliness runs rampant?” Political views aside, in the light of crisis, differing opinions, and fear of the unknown, the arts can continue to unite and inspire. When artists are among turmoil or amid terrible suffering is when the arts can keep them engaged and moving forward in their creativity.…

From poem to poem, the marks range in how they are presented: sometimes they are sensory and other times they are emotional. In The Time Around Scars, the markings are discussed as if they were physical wounds. Meanwhile, the markings of The Cinnamon Peeler come in the form of scents. In keeping with his style, Ondaatje loads the markings in…
