America wants to intervene in Cuban civil war because of the American investments but no reason- maine pulled into Spanish harbor and is blown up- story is told that Spanish blew it up BUT the coal dust in the us main caused it to explode- with this precedent, it gives the US the reason to intervene in the Cuban civil war

Wounded Knee Massacre
December 29, 1890- negotiations with Sioux and 7th cavalry- Sioux agree to come back to where cavalry is but rumored they are to be taken to Oklahoma- cavalry massacre over 250 unarmed men/women/children- 100's more died of hypothermia as they try to escape

America intervenes with Cuban civil war with Spain because of American investments- but they tell citizens its because Spain blew up U.S.S. Maine- surge of patriotism- we portray it as helping Cuba- Spanish American war created a new American empire
