Circadian Rythm

biological alarm clock;

controls: sleep cycle, how much melatonin is produced, temperature change

Stages of Sleep

Awake - alpha waves: waves when you are in a relaxed but awake state

1: Hallucinations

2: Sleep Spindles

3: Deep Sleep

4: Has Delta waves- long slow brain waves of deep sleep (restorative sleep)

REM vs Non-REM sleep

REM: paradoxical sleep- It’s a paradox because our bodies are still but our minds are moving

NREM: every other stage (1-4)

Each REM stage is longer - steals from deep sleep

Typical night's sleep

After every 90 minute sleep cycle you get to REM.

You reach REM 4 times a night. (Stage 4 occurs early on)

Every time you have REM it takes away from Stage 3 and 4 -deep sleep (REM pds increase as night progresses)

Effects of sleep loss

Weakens our immune system

(As we age, we sleep less)

*Spring: lose an hour of sleep and accidents sky rocket

Fall: get an an extra hour of sleep and accidents go way down (even though accidents go up in the fall cause of weather)

Sleep Theories

-Sleep protects

-Sleep helps recuperation

-Memory storage

-Sleep and creative thinking - connected

-Sleep and growth - connected

Sleep Disorders

*Insomnia: lack of sleep

*Narcolepsy: fall asleep at inappropriate times (due to stress)

Sleep apnea: stop breathing in sleep

*Night terrors vs nightmares: night terrors- stage 4, not often remembered

Nightmares- remembered, during REM stage

Dreams (Freud)

-Manifest content: the storyline

-Latent content: the hidden meaning

REM Rebound

when you’ve been sleep deprived and you finally get to sleep again your REM stages with be longer

Dream Theories

*Freud’s wish-fulfillment: “psychic safety valve” - dreams provide a valve for expressing otherwise unacceptable feelings; deeper hidden meaning

*Information-processing: what we do during the day does make it into our dreams

*Physiological function: when you learn something (to keep the things you’ve learned)

*Activation-synthesis: (bring this together) brain takes the random action and synthesizes it into a dream

*Cognitive development: dreams reflect dreamers’ cognitive development (based on the level of their knowledge and understanding

Why is susceptible to Hypnotism?

trusting people; openness to new experiences; postural sway test

Posthypnotic suggestion

when you are affected after the hypnosis like every time seeing a stop sign after, you will sing

Unified Theories

(Topic: Attention is diverted from a painful ice bath How?)

Divided consciousness theory: hypnosis has caused a split in awareness

-dissociation: zoning out

Social influence theory: the subject is so caught up in the hypnotized role that she ignores the cold; role-play (wanna please the Dr.)

Psycoactive drugs

alter perceptions and moods

Depressant : decrease activity in your CNS

Stimulants: increases activity in your CNS (central nervous system)

Hallucinogens: make you see things that aren’t there

Tolerance

body gets used to it so you need more to be content

Withdrawal

onset of symptoms when less of or lack of a substance is taken

Dependence

Physical- body needs the drug to function

Psychological- psychological desire

Depressants

shuts down frontal lobe; Dis-inhibition; Slowed neural processing: thought process and reactions aren’t as fast; Memory disruption; Reduced self-awareness and self control

Alcohol: only drug you can die from withdrawal from

Barbiturates (tranquilizers): give feeling of calmness; tranquil

Opiates- replace your endorphins

Hallucinogens

LSD- acid; near-death experience

*-Marijuana : THC

Stimulants

Amphetamines

Methamphetamine (speed): Crystal Meth

Caffeine: most addictive drug

Nicotine

Cocaine: crack
