When would single line working be introduced?

When 1 line of a double line becomes blocked, single line working by PILOTMAN allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction.

  • Normal Signalling Applies
  • Permissible speed unless otherwise on ticket
  • Must get 'RIGHT' direction ticket
  • Inform Guard
  • Must See the Pilotman and have his authority to enter SLW - is he accompanying you?
  • Write Cancelled on ticket and hand back to Pilotman or fax off on return.
  • May be asked to stop and inform others that SLW is in operation i.e. track workers
  • If Pilotman rides - all points are checked by Pilotman (speeds)
  • Where the SLW applies to (i.e. Crossover names)

What are you actions during Single Line Working in the WRONG Direction - include speeds and arrangements?

  • Must See the PILOTMAN and have his authority to enter SLW - is he accompanying you?
  • Must get 'WRONG' direction ticket.
  • Inform Guard
  • WD movements are controlled by hand signallers.
  • Max 50mph (TSR/ESR will be on ticket)
  • AHBC without WD controls must have attendant with green flag.
  • CCTV/OD/RC if attendant must get green flag, if no attendant approach at caution and proceed if safe to do so.
  • Open intermediate signal box must have YELLOW signal to proceed past
  • secured catch points will have green flag placed.
  • Must be a main signal (rare) or handsignaller with yellow flag to take you over crossover back to main line OR PILOTMAN MUST GO WITH YOU.
  • PILOTMAN can authorise you to obey a position light, or you can speak with signaller for authority to rejoin your original line.

What is the Permissible Speed in the RIGHT Direction?

Permissible Line Speed unless otherwise on the ticket. ESR/TSR as normal.

What is the Permissible Speed in the WRONG Direction?

50mph (15mph over points first train). TSR/ESR will be on ticket but no lineside boards.

Removing a portion of a divided train

Removing a train that has proceeded without authority.

A yellow flag - classed as a stopping point if the box is open.

If no main signal aspect or handsignaller is provided to return to the proper line, what must happen?

The PILOTMAN must travel with you. Drivers responsibility to obtain permission from the signaller to gain access back to the main line. Or you may obey the position light if told to do so by the PILOTMAN.

How many trains are allowed in the Single line section?

Right Direction - If signalling working as normal, then the number of signals dictates the number of trains as per normal.



Wrong Direction - If large section, may be split up with intermediate handsignallers - must reach a clear understanding with the Pilotman.

To allow an assisting train into the SLW section, what must the signaller do first?

Get the authority of the PILOTMAN

When would you work to and from an obstruction?

If the obstruction covers both directions of travel.
