How are we socialised into traditional gender roles?
- Verbal sanctions from parents.
- Toys that we play with from a young age. For example; girls are socialised into working roles and men aren't as jobs are freely available.
What do Radical feminists believe?
That men exploit women in every area of life. They don't account for any progress made towards a more gender balanced society. We live in a patriarchal society in which men dominate. This is to the extent that a man of a lower social class will have more rights and oppourtunities than an upper class woman.
What do Marxist feminists believe?
That men either intentionally or inadvertantly exploit women through capitalism itself. This has lead to a patriarchal society. Marxist feminists have been criticised by black feminists for dismissing discrimination towards women based on race.
What do Liberal feminists believe?
Feminists acknowledge that there has been substantial progress made towards a fairer society for women. However recognise inequalities within society.
What is meant by 'men as victims'?
Men as victims is the argument that men experience prejudice and have problems functioning in society just as women do. In areas such as war, socialisation, sexuality, dress sense and physique.
What is meant by 'masculinity in crisis'
This is the term by Mac an Ghaill (1996) to describe the withering away of traditional/hegemonic forms of masculinity. This may be down to new mass media, modern acceptance of different forms of sexuality.
