Francis Bacon
• The method we use to explore the natural world. You observe something. Why does something happen. You come up with a hypothesis, a theory of why it happened. Test the hypothesis, study it, are there examples that you found that don’t work this way? If every example indicates hypothesis is correct you draw conclusions. Test again, make more observations, and keep repeating this. We can come up with knowledge on how the world functions. The English embrace him as a hero.

• Observed stars with his naked eye, seeing how they moved. He had read widely about other people observing the star and he began to consider is it really possible that the earth is not the center of the universe? The hypothesis is out there but maybe the earth revolved around sun and were not center of universe. He goes and learns how to make his own lenses, constructs a telescope and looks up and discovers the earth is not the center of the universe. We revolve around the sun. That is fundamental to breaking down the other assumptions that we were the center of the universe. It undermines religion. We are not center of universe. • Do not believe any traditional knowledge given to you, test it.
• He certainly believed in god. He though god was the beautiful clock maker that had made this perfect clock, the universe and then wound it up and let it go. Our job was to understand how it all fits together. Once we understand how it all fits together we improve, change and make it better, which is what god wants us to do with our intellect.
• He leads us into the enlightenment.
• Encouraged to think.
