What is a republic?
A republic is government by elected representatives who powers are specified and limited by a constitution.
What two principles of government wre suggested by Montestquieu?
Separation of powers and balance of powers.
What was the difference between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan?
The Virginia Plan favored large states by basing representation in the legislatures on population, whereas the New Jersey Plan advocated equal representation, which favored the small staes.
Who proposed the Great Compromise, and what was his proposition?
Roger Sherman; that there should be two legislatures with equal representation in one and representation based on population in the other.
Why did the North and the South have different views on navigation and tariff laws?
The North was more industrialized and wanted to protect its industries and shipping enterprises. The South lacked industry but needed to trade its agricultural products with foreign countries. Prorective tariffs and laws would hurt that trade.
