Salts

Salt: substance when the hydrogen ions of an acid are partly or completely replaced by an metal ion or ammonium ion.

Hydrated salts: contain water of crystallization.

Anhydrous salts: powder form of salts and they do not contain water of crystallization.

A saturated solution contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in it.

Solubility table:

1. All nitrates are soluble

2. All group 1 and ammonium salts are soluble

3. All chlorides are soluble except Pb and Ag

4. All sulfates are soluble except Pb Ba Ca Ag

5. All carbonates are insoluble except SPA salts

6. All metal oxides and hydroxide are insoulble except for Ba.

Preparing salts:

Titration : acid + alkali = soluble salt + water

DFEC : acid + insoluble base / carbonate = Soluble salt + water / +CO2

Precipitation : Soluble salt + Soluble salt = Insoluble Salt + Soluble salt

Test for water:

Cobalt (II) chloride change from blue to pink

Anhydrous copper (II) sulfate turns from white to blue.

Test for sulfur dioxide: Place a piece of filter paper soaked with acidified potassium manganate (VII) at the mouth of the test-tube.

The acidified potassium manganate (VII) turns colourless.
