What’s the definition of aerobic respiration?

The conversion of oxygen and glucose into carbon dioxide, water and energy. The oxygen is pumped into blood with aid from the heart to create energy for the seven human needs.

Aerobic- with oxygen

Where does aerobic respiration take place?

In the mitochondria of cells

What’s the aerobic word equation?

Glucose + Oxygen —> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)

What’s the aerobic symbol equation?

C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ Energy) was

Why does blood pressure increase during exercise?

Your blood pressure increases because your muscles need more oxygen and glucose and more carbon dioxide to remove.

Why does the heart/pulse rate increase during exercise?

Muscles need more oxygen and energy during exercise so your heart pumps more blood around your body

Why does breathing rate increase during exercise?

Your body needs more blood and therefore oxygen to aid glucose and the removal of carbon dioxide

What does anaerobic mean?

Without oxygen

What’s the word equation for anaerobic respiration?

Glucose —> Lactic Acid (+ Energy)

What are two problems of anaerobic respiration?

- Produces less energy

- Causes cramps in your muscles due to a build up of lactic acid

What’s oxygen debt?

Breathing in oxygen after exercise to break down lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water

What’s fermentation?

Fermented plants lead to alcohol, plants and yeast get energy from fermentation, a type of respiration.

What’s the word equation for fermentation?

Glucose —> carbon dioxide + ethanol + energy

What are two uses of fermentation?

• Alcoholic drinks - made using yeast to ferment the sugar in fruit juice

• Baking - Yeast and sugar are added to dough, the carbon dioxide fills the dough with bubbles causing the dough to rise

What are five jobs the liver performs?

- Fighting off infection

- Neutralises toxins, alcohol

- Controls blood sugar

- Helps blood clot

- Breaks down lactic acid

What’s the definition of metabolism?

The sum of all chemical reactions in a cell or body

Where do the arteries carry the blood?

Away from the heart

Arteries

Where do the veins carry the blood?

Towards the heart

What does the hepatic portal vein do?

Brings blood from the small intestine with digested food in it

What does the hepatic artery do?

Brings oxygenated blood from the heart to the liver

What does the hepatic vein do?

Takes deoxygenated blood from the liver to the heart

What happens to the glucose if it isn’t needed?

It’s converted to glycogen by the liver and stored until needed

What three things happen when you exercise??

- more energy is needed, faster rate of respiration

- heart rate increases, oxygen and glucose are delivered to cells, CO2 is removed

- breathing rate increases

What’s the cardiac output equation?

Cardiac output= stroke volume(dm3) x heart rate(bpm)

Where does respiration take place?

The mitochondria of the cell

What’s the powerhouse of the cell?

How does the body get rid of the waste it produces in respiration?

They’re breathed out, water vapour into condensation and CO2.

Cloudy lime
