FOOD IN THE UK

Title

What is the demand for food?

Demand for all kinds of foods from around the world at any time of the year.

High quantities imported

Increasing trend for organic food or locally grown food as people become more environmentally aware.

What is the carbon footprint ?

The carbon emitted from growing, harvesting, packaging and transporting food around the world. Also known as food miles.

What is organic food?

Grown without pesticides and fertilisers better for people and the environment.

What is agribusiness ?

A type of large-scale industrial farming which has grown in the UK

Uses more pesticides which are harmful to people and the environment

more machinery used which results in job losses

loss of row of bushes or trees which is leading to loss of biodiversity

WATER IN THE UK

Title

What is the demand for water?

Most rainfall (water supply) is in the north west. But most usage (water demand) is in the south east

Usage has increased due to washing machines, dishwashers and population increasing.

Water pollution in the uk

Mainly from

farming fertilisers

vehicle pollutants

Chemical spills

But it is being regulated better and better drainage systems and stricter regulations are being used.

What are the water transfer strategies?

Move water from areas of surplus to deficit.

E.g using dams and aqueducts

However this can be expensive and effect wildlife and is seen as being controversial

ENERGY IN THE UK

Title

What is the energy mix?

It is the different types of energy we rely on.

We used to rely mostly on fossil fuels but nuclear energy has increased just like wind, solar, bioenergy and HEP usage.

We used to rely a lot on coal but now most of the coal power stations have shut down.

What are the supply of fossil fuels?

North Sea oil and gas is nearly all used up

Coal mines are closing

Shale gas is being considered (fracking- where fluid is pumped into shale rock to extract gas) however it is a controversial process.

What are the economic issue of fossil fuel usage?

Extracting and to bring fossil fuels to a pure state is expensive.

However using renewable energy and nuclear is also costly

importing energy is costly but also a possible option.

What are the environmental issue with fossil fuel usage?

Burning fossil fuels give out greenhouse gases and carbon causing the climate change.

Fracking may polluted water and cause mini earthquakes.

Oil spills cause water pollution.

Renewables can also cause damage to the environment e.g wind farms.
