The katyn massacre investigation

- human remains found packed tightly together, face down in several layers


- largest grave has 2000 individuals


- all shot with pistol at close range at back of head, one clothes over head


- clothing associated with polish army


- personal items recovered indicate they were executed around March and April 1941


- trees in area found to have been planted 3 years earlier


- spent pistol cartridges within and outside graves, German manufacturer

What was the verdict for the Katyn massacre

- 8 mass graves found


- victims reburied in new graves with Red Cross present


- German forced not in control of region at the time


- German ammunition in question had been sold to the Soviet’s several years prior

Spanish civil war

- still being investigated


- civil war 1936-1939 between republicans and nationalists, nationalists won


- white terror committed by nationals between 1936-45. Estimated 150,000 - 400,000 were killed


- red terror committed by republicans in 1936, estimated 38,000- 72,000 killed

Problem with Spanish civil war investigation

- gov/ country pays for investigation - has own biases and needs


- only excavating individuals from white terror


- uses to feed into stories of the past

Holocaust

- number of groups targeted, particularly Jews


- other groups included jehovahs witnesses, homosexuals, Spanish republicans and the disabled


- need to be culturally sensitive when you work/ investigate

Ethiopian red terror

- haven’t really been investigated


- 1977-78


- mengistu overthrew the monarchy and took control of the country


- human rights abuses occurred throughout mengitus reign


- estimated over 500,000 individuals killed and over 1000 children ages 11-13 who was left dead in the streets

Cambodia killing fields

- people killed and buried by communist Khmer Rouge regime 1975-79 immediately after civil war


- over 20,000 mass graves


- at least 1,386,734 executed and buried


- 1.7 -2.5 million lost their lives through starvation and disease


- hardly any graves have been excavated


- problem with lack of funds. So some crowd funding

Argentine Dirty war

- occurred during military dictatorship 1976- 1983


- estimated 9000-30,000 killed or forced to disappear


- area important for forensic anthro- was first region forensic anthropologists were working in this field, where forensic anthro was born


- clide snow first to come down and start investigating, was fists to apply archaeological methods to recover bodies and evidence, as result recovery was improved, this caused formation of specialists groups

Yugoslav wars

- 1991-2001


- between republicans that sight sovereignty and government in belgrade that wanted to stop country segregating and to maintain control over region


- estimated 130,000-140,000 individuals killed

Rwanda

- April 7th 1994 - July 15th 1994


- Tutsi and moderate Hutu population were killed by Hutu majority


- estimated between 500,000 and 1,000,000 killed (million)


- all ages were killed with machetes


- international investigation


- still number of mass graves where people haven’t been excavated


- didnt try to hide remains, mass graves that are there are from individuals who died on streets, to tidy up they put them in mass graves


- problems with underfunding


- ICTR was funded by the ICT and charities


- unless someone will come out of it it’s not worth local funding, would need outside funding to continue investigating
