Background

Context-dependent memory - memory that is better recalled when in the same environment the memory was obtained.



Recall memory - memory without prompt



Recognition memory - memory coming from recognising something

Aims

To investigate context-dependent memory and its effects on recall and recognition memory

Sample

Opportunity sample - 8 psychology students RECRUITED 5 p's each



Mean age = 23.4 (17 to 56 years old)


17 females and 23 males

Procedure - part 1

P's were asked to read 2 pages of an academic article. Every P wore headphones. Half the P's were listening to the university cafés background noise. The other half completed the task in silence.

Procedure - part 2

They took a 2 minute break before doing their test on the paper

Procedure - part 3

They completed 10 recall (short answer) questions. Then, they completed 16 recognition (MCQ's) questions. The P's of both conditions were split in half. Half of each condition were asked to listen/not listen to the background noise.

Results - Mean number for each condition for the recall test?

Silent test silent reading - 6.7


Silent test noisy reading - 5.4


Noisy test silent reading - 4.6

Conclusion

Supports the context-dependent memory theory. Shows that the environment you read/study/gain info has to be the same as when you recall that information to recall it better.

Validity

High construct validity - every participant was wearing headphones despite their condition.


Low population validity - Participants were mainly male, so maybe results are in favour of men and not generalisable to women.

Reliability

High internal reliability - Replicable and standardised



Low external validity - not many participants and especially given they were halved again and then again for their respective conditions
