The poem consists of 4 8 line stanzas, and has a strong ABAB rhyme scheme and regular rhythm. The rhythm emphasizes certain syllables e.g. cold and kiss in line 6 which highlights the speakers pain.

The poem moves through time- the narrator constantly shifts between past, present and future. The juxtaposition of the past and present emphasizes that there's no change in his feelings.

To the narrator, the end of the relationship is like death- this emphasizes his former lover's lack of feeling for him. Now, hearing the name reminds him of a death "knell".

When We Two Parted Language of the senses

Typical love poetry uses descriptors that are pleasing to the senses but in this poem the narrator uses negative descriptors such as the sight of his lover's 'pale' cheek and the cold touch of 'dew' and the funeral sound of a 'knell'. This emphasizes how now he's lost his love he no longer sees the world in beauty.

When We Two Parted Language about silence and secrecy

Silence is used to reflect how the relationship was secret in the past and in the present. The silence when they part and the narrator is silent about the affair. The silence contrasts with the voices of his friends in the third stanza which draws attention to the silence.

Love's Philosophy

Story of the poem

1) the narrator is addressing a woman- he is trying to persuade her to be with him romantically

2) The narrator gives examples of how everything in nature is connected in an intimate way. He believes that this is God's law and therefore should be obeyed

3) He asks the woman why she's ignoring this and questions what use the bonds in nature are if he can't have her

Love's Philosophy Form

The poem is short and apparently simple. The rhyme scheme is regular ABAB but two lines in each stanza don't fully rhyme suggesting them not being together is out of place and disrupts the harmony.

Love's Philosophy Structure

The poem is tightly structured to be persuasive. It is set out almost like an argument each stanza building on a point. He uses a rhetorical question at the end of each stanza which is short and stands out showing how him and his lover are out of place.
