Poetry has been written throughout history to portray a variety of different feelings and emotions. A major emotion depicted using poetry is love. Love has many different aspects that can be explored individually by various poets, depending on their own views of love and the thoughts and actions that can be shown. In this essay, I will be focusing on the works of Robert Browning, Simon Armitage, Chinua Achebe and William Shakespeare and how each of their poems compare and contrast how love has been presented in each.

Robert Browning has written a variety of poems surrounding the feeling of love. I will be focusing on My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover. My Last Duchess is composed as a dramatic monologue and is about an egotistical

This is shown as Browning uses pronouns such as ‘my’, this shows the possessive element. The use of the phrase ‘there she stands’ is used when he is describing the painting of his last duchess. The choice of words suggests his control as if his previous wife was an object for display and still is even after her death. Obsession is focused upon as the Duke says ‘the curtain I have drawn for you’, showing clearly that he keeps a curtain draped over the painting, hinting at the power and control the Duke holds. The unhealthy possessive nature of the Duke links closely to his controlling attitude as he is able to frighten and manipulate people, this is what leads to the death of his Duchess as he commands for her to be killed due to the fact he does not like the attention she received. This is explored towards the middle of the poem as he says ‘calling up that spot of joy’, suggesting that she was too easily impressed by other men and was not loyal enough to him. This associates with jealous and controlling love. Jealousy is analysed thoroughly throughout My Last Duchess, his paranoia is first highlighted upon when he is describing the painting of the last duchess as he quotes the words of the painter who says ‘never hope to produce the

"My Last Duchess" explicitly portrays the emotions and thoughts of the Duke of Ferrara. As it is set in a private art gallery in the palace of the Duke of Ferrara and depicts a devastating self-portrait of royalty that exhibits more of the Duke's personality than Ferrara intends. The poem also reveals the inner thoughts of the Duke Of Ferrara through the form of monologue. In the poem there are elements of jealousy as the portrait of the Duchess was made by Fra Pandolf; a monk who emphasises that he once was a religious and chaste man.…

Harold Bloom introduced Robert Browning’s “My Last Duchess” first appeared in the “Dramatic Lyrics in 1842”(13), inspired by the history of a Renaissance Duke, Alfonso II, a widower of a young wife died in suspicious circumstances. The history of this situation followed with Duke Alfonso courted another young lady, whom he eventually married. “My Last Duchess” is a monologue style of poem that happened during the time of the Duke negotiation for courtship of a new wife. Although there were no characters’ name mentioned in the work, one can figured the implication from the Duke’s actions and expressions. With “Cyrano De Bergerac”, a book by Edmond Rostand, and “O’ Were I Loved as I Desire to be” a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, they both collectively collaborate to get this message across. However, these texts also have significant differences as well. Case in point, the pieces use different plot devices and literary techniques in order to express their theme of how love is difficult. Through close comparison and analyzation, we can identify that both of these works reveal a similar theme of the struggles of love.…

The two poems I am going to discuss are Robert Browning‘s ‘My Last Duchess’ , and Edgar Allen Poe‘s ‘The Raven’ . I will discuss the way the forms of the poems and how their different structures, one being written in verse and the other in dramatic monologue, effect the reader’s interpretation, lead to an unreliable narrator. I will discuss the use of rhyme and rhythm, and also how the speaker’s psyche and strong emotions, like anger and jealousy in ‘My Last Duchess’ and madness in ‘The Raven’ alter the speaker’s reliability. ‘My Last Duchess’ is written in the form of a dramatic monologue, and uses iambic pentameter to mimic natural speech, as well as using rhyming couplets, which give the poem a faster pace and gives the character a stronger voice.…

It is difficult for some people to go against the beliefs of the majority, especially when a topic is considered too controversial to challenge. In Margaret Atwood’s “My Last Duchess”, this happens to be the case for her female protagonist when her class studies a poem by Robert Browning that is also titled “My Last Duchess”, in which a Duke had his Duchess killed for his own selfish reasons. Unexpectedly, the young girl’s interpretation of the Duke is vastly different from the rest of her class, thereby leading her to struggle with having a contentious opinion in addition to dealing with the realities of womanhood and teenage relationships. The purpose of Robert Browning’s poem, “My Last Duchess”, in Margaret Atwood’s short story of the same…

I will be drawing the similarities and differences between ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’ by John Keats and ‘My Last Duchess’ by Robert Browning and how these similarities and differences affect the portrayal of relationships in the poems. There is a lot of history utilised in both poems. At the time Robert Browning wrote ‘My Last Duchess’, there was a large influence in Italy mainly over possessions and status. The story of the Borgias family, who paid people to kill those that they didn’t like or were not on good terms with, also influenced him. John Keats was heavily influenced by the thoughts and beliefs of people in 1795-1821.…
