Why is gas compressible?

Most of the volume of a gas sample is empty space.

Why does gas have pressure?

Pressure is the result of gas particles colliding with objects (ie. walls of their container)

How does KMT explain Boyle's Law?

If you reduce the volume of a gas, the particles move shorter distances before colliding with the walls of the container. They will collide more often, therefore creating more pressure.

How does KMT explain Charles' Law?

Increasing the temperature of a gas, represents increasing the average speed of the particles. When they are moving faster, they tend to collide more often, and this puts more pressure on the container walls, causing the volume to increase.

What is the law of combining volumes?

When measured at the same temp and pressure, volumes of gaseous reactants and products of chemical reactions are always in simple ratios of whole numbers.

What is Avagadro's theory?

An equal volume of gases at the same temperature and pressure will contain an equal number of molecules. The volume occupied by a gas and the pressure it exerts in a container are not related to either the size or mass of the molecules. The pressure and volume depend only on how many molecules there are and on how much Kinetic energy they have as they collide with each other and the walls of the container.

What is molar volume?

The volume that one mole of gas occupies at a specified temperature and pressure. (Molar volue is the same for all gases at the same temp and pressure).
