What is the origin of fuel?

- mineral

- vegetable

- animal

Widely accepted that it originated from the decomposed marine life. Supported by the amount of salt water found below oil bearing strata.

What does all oil and fuel come from

Crude oil

What is the manufacture process of gasoline?

Refined from crude oil. Gasoline is a mixture if hydrogen and carbon and form many hydrocarbon products .

The crude oil (dark oily liquid) is put through a heater. This then goes through the refiner. It separates the crude oil based on temperature and size of molecules within the substance. At the high temperatures of 340 degrees bitumen runs off. The remaining substance rises up the refinery. This continues as more substances are drained off:

What properties should aviation have?

1. Small bulk for easy distribution * ie. Tankers)

2. High volatility to be able to change readily from a liquid to a gas by evaporation (want to burn off easily)

3. High calorific value (amount of energy produced)

4. Stability (not explode when you dont want it to).

What makes gasoline corrosive?

Dues to its sulphur and additive content.

When it is burnt in air it forms sulphur dioxide and when this mixes with water it produces SULPHUROUS ACID which is corrosive to exhaust systems.

Name piston engine ac fuel additives.

Anti knock

Dyeing (blue)

Antioxidant

Anti static

Stability

Name jet engine ac fuel additives

FSII AL41/61 (fuel system icing inhibitor - anti icing)

Lubricity AL61/48

Anto corrosion AL61

Anti fungal growth AL41/48

Name the properties of aviation gas turbine fuels.

- ease of flow ( under all operating conditions - hot/cold = thicker in the cold)

- quick starting the engine

- complete combustion

- A high calorific value

- non corrosive

- by-products of combustion not affect engine components (limit amount I'd damage done by by-products)

- lubrication for moving parts.

Fuel identification avtag/fsii1

Fuel identification avcat/fsii

Fuel identification avgas

Fuel identification avtur

Fuel identification. Avtur/fsii

Where can you find the type of fuel used for your ac?

Ac 700

Fuel uk standards

What are the ac fuel system requirements?

- an ac fuel system must hold sufficient fuel to allow the aircraft to fulfil its operational role.

- must hold reserve fuel for energencies/diversions.

- supply fuel under all operating conditions.

What are the secondary uses of fuel?

- cooling (oil/hydrogen fluid)

- trim aircraft

- aerodynamic cooling (supersonic ac - leading edges get very hot in supersonic)

- lubricated valves it passes through.

What is a overwing/open orifice fuel system?

This is operated by a trigger nozzle and is used on light ac and small helicopters.

The main disadvantage to of this system is that it could allow contaminated through the open orifice.

Could get fod in system.

All ac have open line as a redundancy. Will tamra longer.

Avgas has smaller nozzle than avtur.

Use a cloth to prevent splash back.

What ac need a pressure fed system?

Larger aircraft/helicopters which require large amounts of fuel in a shorter time frame.
