What are the 3 common states of matter
Solid, liquid and gas
What is a mixture?
2 or more solid materials put together.
Is milk a mixture, a solution or both?
mixture
What is Soluble and insoluble?
What is solubility
Soluble - material dissolves.
Insoluble - material doesn't dissolve
Solubility - if material dissolves or doesn't dissolve
What is a solution
One substance dissolves in another. Is transparent.

example: salt water
What is a solute?
What is a solvent?
Solute - substance that dissolves (salt)
Solvent - substance in which solute dissolves (water)
How do you separate salt crystals from Salt water solution?
Evaporate the water by boiling salt water solution and salt crystals will remain.
What do you mean by the solution is "saturated"?
A solution is saturated when the solvent can't dissolve any more solute.

example: when salt water is saturated, you will start to see salt particles at the bottom undissolved
How do you make "supersaturated" solutions?
A solution that contains more solute than it should is Supersaturated solution.

Boiling water will dissolve more salt
What happens when supersaturated solution cools down?
You start to see crystals
What is a suspension?
Mixture with relatively large particles. Particles settle out or can be filtered

example: orange juice, salad dressing
What is a colloid?
Mixture with small particles. Difficult to filter.

Example: Latex paint, fog, egg whites
What is an emulsion?
Colloid mixture that is immiscible (won't mix evenly)
Emulsifier keep layers from separating

example: mayonnaise. Emulsifier of mayonnaise is egg yolks
What is a "homogeneous" mixture and "Heterogeneous" mixture?
Homogeneous --- mixture that components are mixed evenly

Heterogeneous --- mixture that is not mixed evenly
What is an alloy?
A homogeneous mixture that is made up of 2 or more metals
Why are alloys important in making musical instruments?
Alloys have properties (characteristics) of 2 different metals. soft copper mixed with hard zinc makes it easier to make instruments
How does the "bends" happen?
When a diver goes deep down in the ocean, the pressure increases. The air particles in the blood(nitrogen) increases. Diver's blood is saturated with nitrogen. When the diver is back at the surface, the extra nitrogen tries to come out and get stuck in blood vessels causing a lot of pain
