What is Deviance?

-Different, extreme, unusual, bizarre


-Is defined by a culture's norms and expectations.


-The idea of what is deviant in a culture can change over time.


-It is situational

What is Distress?

Unpleasant and upsetting to the person.

What is Dysfunctional?

It can effect the person's daily life and routine.

What is Danger?

Behavior that can be harmful to oneself and harmful to others.

What is the difference between abnormality and eccentricity?

-Someone who is eccentric does not experience distress, and they freely choose to be different.


-Being eccentric provides pleasure, not pain.


-Having a mental disorder is not something that can be chosen out of free will.

Somatogenic Perspective

-Abnormal psychological functioning is caused by something physical.


-Kraepelin: claimed that physical problems such as lack of sleep influenced mental deficiencies.


-Syphilis study: noticed that the disease had physical and mental symptoms such as delusions of grandeur.

Psychogenic Perspective

-Abnormal psychological functioning is purely psychological.


-Hypnotism demonstrated its true potential.


-Cured hysteria which was had no physical origins.


-Hypnotism could cause a physical symptom to away or even create one.
