The introduction of sucrose into our diet correlates with the incidence of caries. What do the bacteria in your mouth do with sucrose? (Name the products that cause caries and the products that lead to gingivitis.)
Caries are tooth decay caused by the metabolic action of bacteria. The streptococci species of S. sobrinus and S. mutans metabolize glucose and produce sticky polymers called fructans and glucans, creating a biofilm home for microorganisms. After a while, microbes ferment the sugars and create acids as a result. Calculus and plaque build-up in the gingival sulcus often cause abrasion of the gingival membrane. Coupled with inflammation, this is gingivitis.
What is the difference between the normal flora E. coli and E. coli O157:H7?
E. coli 0157:H7 contains shiga toxins and is grouped into the dangerous E. coli's known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). It essentially destroys enterocytes (gut epithelial cells), creating lesions and blody diarrhea.
For most bacterial and viral enteric infections, diarrhea is the major and the life-threatening sign. What is the most important component of treatment in these cases and what does this mean for the children of the world?
Making sure that those with diarrhea have access to oral-rehydration therapy (ORT) can save millions of lives in the world from death by dehydration, especially children in poorer countries. ORT essentially consists of a sugar-salt mixture that restores electrolyte balance and rehydrates the individual with diarrhea.
