Surface area to volume ratio for cell growth.

Surface area: Increase by a factor of four.

Volume: Increase by a factor of eight.

Sexual vs. Asexual reproduction

Sexual: Create a new organism (multicellular organisms).

Asexual: Create a copy of itself (split a mother cell into a daughter cell) (unicellular organisms).

Stages of the cell cycle:

1. Interphase -> Cell prepares for cell division (Mitosis):

a.) Rapid growth

b.) DNA Synthesis/replication

c.) Centrioles replicate (prep. for cell division)

2. Mitosis -> Division of a cell's nucleus:

a.) Prophase - Visable chromosomes/(-) nuclear envelope/doubled chromosomes/sister chromatids

b.) Metaphase - Chromosomes move to the equator

c.) Anaphase - centromeres split/sister chromatids pulled apart (going to opposite poles of the cell)

d.) Telophase - two daugther cells are fromed/cells seperate in cytokinesis/nuclear membrane reappears

3. Cytokinesis -> Division of a cell's cytoplasm

What is the purpose of mitosis?

Allow for growth and repair of tissues.

Possible causes of cancer:

Radiation, certain chemicals, some hormones (e.g. increased estrogen levels), genes, etc.).

How do embryonic cells differentiate into many types.

Process of differentation -> A cell can become a precursor to a different type of cell

Benefits of stem cell research.

Repair damaged organs, help those with cancer, contribute to research, save people from death, etc.
