Sampling method?

Opportunity - whoever was at the child guidance clinic in London

Participants?

44 children, 13 girls and 31 boys aged 5-17 years. 22 were Grade IV thieves, 4 were Grade I. Average intelligence, 15 above and 2 below.

Control group?

Matched on sex, age and IQ, were emotionally disturbed but did not steal. Mothers also involved.

Procedures?

Given mental tests by a psychologist to assess intelligence on Binet Scale and emotional attitude. Social worker interviews mother and early psychiatric history. Psychology and social worker report to Bowlby, who interviews both child and mother. Other reports considered. Most carried on therapy.

What are the different personality types?

Normal, depressed, circular, hyperthymic, affectionless and schizoid.

How many had the affectionless character and separations?

14 thieves, 12 had separation. Altogether 17 thieves had separation, whereas only 2 control did.

Is there any other factors?

17 of the non-separates had mothers which were irritable. 5 of 27 fathers openly hated the kids, but control group reported the same.

What did Bowlby conclude?

Children are less likely to become offenders if have a healthy development, focus on prevention.

Evaluate use of a case atudy

No causal conclusions drawn, but very rich detailed data obtained.

Why nah it be biased?

It is based on the views of only Bowlby, and the recollections may be inaccurate, or the mothers may have lied due to social desirability bias.

Evaluate the sample

All 88 were emotionally disturbed, so cannot generalise findings to all children, and some children had separation but did not steal.

What are ethical issues?

Confidentiality, valid consent, working with vulnerable individuals
