Why do infants for attachments

Infants have an image drive to form an attachment and that attachments are adaptive.

Social releases - physical and behaviour such as laughing or crying. These are met by an instinctive parental response

Aim of strange situation

To assess how infants behave under conditions of stress and novelty, in order to test the quality of their attachment to their mother

Procedure of strange situation

Controlled observations with a 2 way mirror where psychologists could observe the infants behaviour. Consisted of 8 stages, each lasting 3 minutes. Infants were 12-18 months

What categories were assessed in the experiment

Separation anxiety, stranger anxiety, exploration and secure base behaviour and response to reunion
