How do you calculate the magnification used with a microscope?

Magnification = image size / size of real object.

What are the differences between light microscopes and electron microscopes?

Light microscopes are relatively cheap and can be used almost anywhere, whereas electron microscopes are very expensive, large and have to be kept in special temperature, pressure and humidity controlled rooms.

What are the structures of an animal cell and their functions?

The nucleus controls the cell and contains the DNA. • The cytoplasm is where all of the chemical reactions take place. • The cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell. • The mitochondria are where are aerobic respiration takes place to release energy for the cell. • The ribosomes are where protein synthesis takes place, making all of the proteins needed in the cell.

What are features of a plant cell that animal cells don’t have?

The cellulose cell wall strengthens and supports the cell. • The chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that absorbs light for photosynthesis. • The permanent vacuole is a space filled with cell sap that keeps the cell rigid and supports the plant.

What is the difference between eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells?

Eukaryotic cells all have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and genetic material (DNA) that is enclosed in a nucleus. All animals are eukaryotes.

Prokaryotic cells have genetic material that is not enclosed within a nucleus. instead it forms a single DNA loop called plasmids

How is a nerve cell specialised?

They have long axons that can carry the nerve impulses from one place to another. They have lots of dendrites to make connections to other nerve cells. They have lots of mitochondria to provide the energy needed to make the transmitter chemicals.
