What is ecology?

The study of processes, which influence the distribution of organisms in an environment.

What is an ecosystem?

All the living organisms together with the non living things in an area.

The arrows in a food chain show what?

The flow of energy.

What type of animals are they if they eat plants?

Herbivores.

What type of animal are they if they eat other animals?

Carnivores.

Big carnivores such as lions are what?

Predators.

What are the animals that carnivores eat?

Prey.

What is a habitat?

A collection of species where animals live, which provides them with food and shelter.

What is adaption?

Changes that animals develop to cope with their surroundings.

What are some adaption features for animal that live in the desert? (camels etc.)

Long eyelashes to dust away the sand off their eyes, large feet to stop them from sinking into the sand, stay without water for 6 months and sandy coloured coat for camouflage.

What are some adaptations for animals living in the Arctic?

Thick layer of blubber under their skin to keep them warm, white coat as camouflage, thick coat to trap hot air to keep them warm.

What are biotic factors?

Living factors that affect organisms in a habitat. E.g. Prey and predators.

What is an abiotic factor?

Non living factors which affect an organism in a habitat. E.g. Temperature and sunlight.

What is a species?

An organisms that are able to interbreed to produce fertile offspring.

What is an environment?

All the conditions that surround a living organism.

What is population?

The total number of individuals of one species in a habitat.

When there is too many organisms to count in one habitat what is it necessary to take?

Samples.

To sample the amount of buttercups there are in the school field, what must you use?

A quadrant - a known sized square.

To make the sampling fair, what must you use?

A computer to generate randomly where the quadrants would go.
