Why was the Platt Amendment signed in 1901?

Spanish-American War in 1898 resulted in Cuba becoming independent state

US Army had control over Cuba until 1902 - Americans thought Cuba wasn't ready for self-government and we wanted resources

Platt amendment would limit Cuban independence and give US rights to intervene in Cuban affairs - accepted this because we withdrew troops

What were some consequences of the Platt Amendment? Note - it was repealed in 1934

Cuba was formally independent but we had control over it

Cuba couldn't ally with anyone else

Cuban economy became dependent on US market

US Naval bases established in Cuba (Guantanamo Bay)

What was Manifest Destiny?

Thought of in 1845 by John O'Sullivan

Justified westward expansion

Why was Manifest Destiny influential?

It was a formally known, universally acknowledged term referring to our westward-bound expansion. It helped justify why we were taking native land.

What is some background info about the Alaska purchase?

William Seward (US secretary of state) bought AK from Russia for $7.2 million

He did pay 2 mil more than he wanted, but it was a rather easy negotiation

First called "Seward's Folly", but eventually was removed of the dubious honor

Why did we purchase Alaska?

Westward expansion (Manifest Destiny) - this was a ton of land

Russia thought Alaska could be a weakness in war and needed money

Possibly to divert attention from impeachment/dislike of Andrew Johnson

Why was the US Victory over Mexico so important for expansion?

Acquired 500,000 sqr miles of land

We gained parts of CA, UT, NV, AZ, NM, CO, and WY

Added to Texas (acquired from MEX earlier)

Worked exceptionally with the concept of Manifest Destiny

Gold in CA created migration/link between halves of US

Why was the US able to expand so much from the 1840s to the 1890s?

Mexico was weak, as were Native Americans

UK didn't want to go to war with us

Russia was willing to compromise with us

We were powerful, united, and had an expansionist government

How successful was "Dollar Diplomacy" in the Caribbean in the late 19th/early 20th centuries?

Fairly successful

Roosevelt Corollary (1904) allowed us control over Latin America

Military aggression followed in the next 10-15 yrs

However, people weren't happy with the amount of aggressiveness, so they pushed for "Good Neighbor Policy" - much more mild (we later withdrew troops from Central/South American Nations)

How important was the US Naval Power when dealing with Europe from 1901-1922?

Only crucial in WWI - Britain needed us to defeat Germany

Most of our attention was focused in Central/Latin America

Therefore, US Naval Power was not very important when concerning our relations with Europe from 1901-1922 except for our influence in WWI.

How far was US responsible for the Spanish-American War of 1898?

USS Maine was sunk - many Americans were put into a craze

Questionable government elections ensued

McKinley sent war message to Congress, but Spain ultimately declared war

It was partly (1/2way?) our responsibility

How far did US Power in Central/South America increase between the 1840s and 1930s?

A good deal, especially on Central America

"Dollar Diplomacy" had a huge impact

Roosevelt Corollary made it so that we had military power

1920s - focused on financial influence
