It improved it! The inventions of type, such as letterpress, lithography, and photography, became more interesting to people and encouraged them to become involved in it.
It also attracted more people to purchase and become interested in commercial arts.

Although his work was pretty it could not easily be massed produced. Beauty needed to be simplified, because it's faster to make.

They wanted to beautify their national identity to celebrate their national achievements.

Women in the US were depicted as prestiged, modest, and fully clothed. Women in Europe were more revealing and sexualized.

Yes. Their style was more simple, realistic and toward academic sophistication, but not daring and innovative like the Europeans.

What did these movements have in common?

Difference - Arts and Crafts fucntions are utilitarian where as Art Nouveau's are for visual use.


Similarity - Both of their objectives were to beautify things for the common folk and a direct response to the problems occuring in the contemporary art world.

Blacklettering was found on German Art Nouveau posters.
Celtic elements were seen in Scottish Art Nouveau.

The four Macs were a collaborative group in Scotland.
What are the benefits and challenges created by this type of design relationship?

They were able to create innovative art that quickly became apart of Scotlands national identity.
However, excluding Mackintosh who became a cornerstone for design history, the other 3 were cast aside and overshadowed.
One of the reasons being that two of the artists were women.

Yes. Because they were forced to go to more extremities to have their art recognized by the out-of-touch, conservative, historicist that ruled over the Vienna Academy.

The role of Gesamtkunstwerke is to unify the arts in many ways as possible.
Yes. It helps designers think more innovatively and could evoke ideas. It's beneficial for artists to explore different fields of art.

How did conservative strains in Austrian and German culture affect Art Nouveau in Berlin and Vienna?

It caused the birth of Sezessionstil (German Art Nouveau) and the Vienna Secession and the strains caused innovation in their art community to become stagnant.
The conservatives were to fixated on Academic Arts from the past.

What factors led to the decline of Art Nouveau in the early 20th century?

World War I, in 1914, focused designers work on furthering national causes.
It all became to expensive to mass produce.
People began to grow tired of the look and found themselves wanting less, not more.

How did the Sachplakat style break with earlier models of Japanese-influenced simplification?

Because its radical simplification was a direct rejection of the earlier ornamental styles.

Do you see Bernhard’s Priester poster as constituting a revolutionary design shift or an incremental one? Why?

Yes. The simplifications and blunt messages in his poster later became a part of modern advertising.
"Here is the product, this is the name" - means you have 3 - 5 seconds to capture a potential consumers attention. So, you want to get the image and name to them as quick as possible.
Otherwise, it can get lost amongst ornamental designs.

In your view, were British First World War recruitment posters unethical?
Why or why not?

It is unethical, because these posters are sexist towards both male and females.
It's emasculating. These posters would manipulate men into becoming recruits out of fear of being seen as emasculine.
The posters would also use women as a tool for emasculation. They communicated that if men didn't go to war, then they were just as weak and cowardly like women, which is extremely offensive.

Do you think that the aesthetic quality of a propaganda poster is important to its success? Explain.

Yes. Again, the visuals can lure and seduce viewers into believing their message.
Powerful visuals greatly enhance the poster and makes it more provocative.
